The world today is urban and cities have become the sites of economic inequality, poverty, indignity and political conflict for a majority of the world’s urban population. In response, citizens from New York City and London to Nairobi and Rio de Janeiro are beginning to demand a ‘right to the city’- rights to decent wages and housing, education and healthcare, dignity and respect. What exactly is this right to the city? How does urban governance in Pakistan produce inequality, insecurity and instability? What can we, as ordinary citizens, do to create urban environments that serve the many, not the few? Join us on Saturday, October 27th, as we gather expert panels of economists, anthropologists, historians, legal academics and activists to unpack the idea of the ‘right to the city’ and to explore how such a political program can transform cities from sites of exploitation to sites of emancipation!
IDEAS Senior Research Fellow Ali Cheema will be on a panel ‘Democratizing Urban Pakistan’ at 3.30pm – 5pm.
