The gender gaps in political representation and participation remain serious global
challenges that are particularly acute in Pakistan. While a record number of women
contested general seats in Pakistan’s National Assembly Elections 2018, only eight women candidates were returned to the lower house. Similarly, 11 million fewer women exercised their right to vote than men in the 2018 Elections. The severity of these challenges persist in spite of the passage of the Election Act 2017, which has legislated measures to strengthen women’s political representation and participation that were implemented by the Election Commission of Pakistan in 2018.

The Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives (IDEAS), the Collective for Social Science Research (CSSR), the National Commission for the Status of Women (NCSW) and Pakistan@100 invite you to the Dialogue: Balancing Pakistani Politics for Better. The aim of the IDEAS-CSSR-NCSW-Pak@100 Dialogue is for policymakers, activists and academics to come together to recognize Pakistan’s persisting gender inequalities in political participation, understand their causes and identify actions that can overcome them. We feel that this is an excellent way to celebrate the International Women’s Day 2019 that has made a strong call to action to #BalanceforBetter.
