The project will be introducing a new model of delivering in-service teacher training to government sector primary school teachers (PSTs), which builds upon the existing structure of cluster-based Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in Punjab.The Directorate of Staff Development (DSD) employs a cluster-based approach to in-service teacher training which constitutes a cascading model. Although the model has been comprehensive its reach but current design needs further improvement before it can address the content knowledge deficit of Primary School Teachers (PSTs). The intervention is aimed to provide subject-specific content training on selected topics within the Grade III-IV mathematics and science syllabi and it will be piloted in three districts of province Punjab, Hafizabad, Vehari and Bahawalnagar. The pilot will deploy technology as well as high-quality instructional material (selected and adapted to our context) and provide mentorship support to improve the existing CPD program. It is expected that the project will improve teachers’ subject knowledge as well as teaching practice and also, eventually, improve student learning outcomes in beneficiary schools.
Currently, we are doing a review of international literature on in service teacher training and teacher practice. Alongside we are conducting meetings with DTE (district teacher educator), CTSC heads and teachers to get the detail understanding about the current CPD framework i.e. what constitute the mentoring of teachers, what are the responsibility and routines of DTEs, Teachers and CTSC heads and what is the possible shape our intervention can take.
